Is Christianity Lite A Legit Thing?

Christianity Lite

Hey Andy, is it possible to be a “lite” Christian? For instance, say you’re a good person deep down, you believe in the goodness of people, and you help people, but you don’t live a restricted life, you drink occasionally with friends, you enjoy a nasty joke, and you have sex outside of marriage (in a relationship)? I am in college. I joined a Christian group and they would crap their pants if they knew that about me. I like them…but they are such prudes! lol.

Hi. You know, there’s this very deadly disease that’s been spreading from many of the churches and ministries over the years, and has now overtaken many parts of the world. This disease is called “cheap grace“.

What is Cheap Grace All About?

Cheap Grace says that you can be a “lite Christian” (a.k.a. “Liberal Christian”). This type of “Christianity” says that God loves you the way you are and because He loves you, He won’t ask you to change a thing. It also says that holiness is not a factor, and discipleship is a disinterest or considered unnecessary. There’s no repentance in it, just acceptance, and people who have accepted  this Cheap Grace believe that as long as people are “good” in terms of the world’s standards, then they too will be saved, and anybody who says otherwise (even quotes scripture out of context to back it up) are closed-minded and intolerant.

Unfortunately, my friend, it sounds like you’ve been infected with this deadly disease, and if you don’t take the antidote combination (Jesus Christ with Costly Grace), then yes, you will surely die.

What is a “Christian”?

OK, enough joking. Here’s the thing: a Christian is somebody who recognizes that they’re a sinner and that they can’t do anything on their own to get rid of it, and therefore acknowledged their sin, repented of it, and gave their lives over fully to Jesus Christ. Sure, we still sin, but not intentionally, and then when we do, the Holy Spirit, who dwells inside of us, lets us know in a way that burns from within with guilt, causing us to repent of it. Peter and Paul often compared this action to throwing off clothes that are on fire (imagine your clothes catching on fire and how quickly you’d try to remove them from your body). And in terms of the way your Christian friends act, you call them prudes because they won’t willingly indulge in sin like you do. They refrain from sin not only because of what I already mentioned, but also because of their relationships with Jesus. They know that sin will damage their close relationship with Him, even separating them from Him, and that terrifies them. If you had a close relationship with Jesus, you’d understand also, but you obviously don’t, so it doesn’t make sense to you.

So are you a Lite Christian?

So is it possible to be a “Lite Christian”? In terms of faking it, yeah, probably, but there’s really no such thing. You’re either for Christ or you’re against Christ. You either read and obey the Bible, or you don’t. You either live for Christ, or you live for yourself. Unfortunately, you sound like you live for yourself, and that’s simply just not what a Christian is.
