A Strong Foundation (1 Peter 2:2-10)

Strong foundation with a marshmallow tower

Summary

In this lesson, students will build towers from marshmallows and toothpicks to learn that Jesus must be the foundation of our faith.

Scripture:

1 Peter 2:2-10

Materials Needed

  • Mini-marshmallows
  • Toothpicks
  • Bible (of course!)

Preparation

  • Open the bags of mini-marshmallows and boxes of toothpicks
  • Ask the builders to come forward and pair up

Activity

  1. Students will construct a tower on top of a table.
  2. When the group has completed this project, thank them and have them return to their seats.

Comment on how great a job they all did on their towers!

Say: “As long as this foundation remains unshaken, the tower is in no danger. But if the foundation is shaken (at this point, jerk the table, like a small earthquake, causing the structures to fall), the towers can’t stand.” (if some do stand, that will be an awesome demonstration for the scripture).

Scripture

Read 1 Peter 2:2-10

Explain the scriptures by stressing v.8B-10

“They stumble because they do not obey God’s word, and so they meet the fate that was planned for them. But you are not like that, for you are a chosen people. You are royal priests, a holy nation, God’s very own possession. As a result, you can show others the goodness of God, for He called you out of the darkness into His wonderful light. (for) “Once you had no identity as a people; (but) now you are God’s people. Once you received no mercy; (but) now you have received God’s mercy.”

(Emphasize the point that a life built on any foundation other than Jesus is destined to fall, because its foundation will eventually fail).
