When the word “Miracles” is mentioned, what comes to your mind? Birth, healing, financial help out of nowhere, narrowly missing a car accident, maybe Jedi mind tricks? How about acts of nature? But for some reason, not many think about rebuking strong winds or closing up the skies from a fierce storm.
Spring 2008
In Spring 2008, I left work early due to a cold. While leaving, an employee mentioned that there was a tornado watch and warning for some of the surrounding areas. As I sat warming up the car’s engine, I prayed, “Lord, would you please keep everybody safe, and not let anybody get killed from this?” Later that night, after everything happened, I prayed asking the Lord that people might come together and give all glory to Him.
That night, as I continued to watch the news, each channel continued to mention that though everything was demolished, not a single person was killed. In fact, one channel said that the sniffer-dogs didn’t find any bodies, dead or alive. Also, the Red Cross has stepped in to help, asking others to join them in helping, and the neighborhood people are calling themselves “blessed” because, though all was demolished, nobody died (Praise the Lord!)
John the Baptist
In Jesus’ time, the Jews had not seen real miracles in quite a while, and so most believed that it had stopped. Then John the Baptist comes along, plus Jesus’ performing of miracles that nobody had even seen before, (yet were told of through prophecy), or that they had only read about Elijah, the great prophet, performing.
Miracles Ended with the Apostles
There are also some today who believe that miracles ended with the Apostles. In fact, I’ve heard several Pastors and professors saying this on Moody Radio. But the Christians after the Apostles performed miracles, so many to the point where they felt the need to write to about how to use them in worship. I can also tell you of miracles I’ve seen, or that God has done through me, so there’s no convincing me that God doesn’t do them anymore.
Serving in Kentucky
For instance, while serving in Kentucky, a young couple I know had a child who was born blind. He was definitely blind, couldn’t see at all, etc. One evening, I walked by him and noticed he was looking right at me as I walked by, following my movement. I mentioned it to his parents, and they explained to me that a missionary from their church returned at about the same time that some people in the congregation returned from their trip to Jerusalem. The members had brought a jar full of water from the Jordan River (clearly, a time when you could bring liquids on the airplane). During a recent service, the missionary drank the (dirty, muggy) water, laid his hands on the baby, prayed, and since then, their son has been able to see! And to this day, the missionary will swear to it that he didn’t do anything on his own power, but that God did it through him. That’s a miracle, and it happened in a small Kentucky town in 2007.
Heck, I’ve got a whole bunch of examples in my own life I could tell you about, many of which I’ve even posted on here and in other places (I’ll link those once I add them to this site), even preached about it a couple times, insisting that I didn’t do them, but that through faith, Christ did them through me, or used me as a vessel through which to do such works.
Son May Bring Glory To the Father
Remember, Jesus said, “Anyone who has faith in me will do what I have been doing. He will do even greater things than these, because I am going to the Father. And I will do whatever you ask in my name, so that the Son may bring glory to the Father. You may ask me for anything in my name, and I will do it.”
Pray For Rain
So I challenge you. The next time you’re caught in a storm, try rebuking the winds. Or when there’s a drought, pray for rain. But in everything, praise the Lord for listening and answering prayers!
