The Rocks Would Cry Out

The Rocks Would Cry Out - Luke 19:40 The Rocks Will Cry Out praises to God

One day, some time ago, I was taking a nap–in my car.

A Little Background

My wife and I used to live in Newport News, Virginia, and she’d gotten a job in Chesapeake. So she’d drive out there during the week, but on most Fridays, I would drive her in order to free her from a day of driving, and this was one of those Fridays.

The previous evening, we were up late, working (I was a Youth Pastor somewhere at the time, also). So upon returning her from lunch, I decided to take a nap in the parking lot–in my car.

Some more background, I sometimes liked to listen to praise music in my iPod while I napped.

Dreaming to Worship Music

So I was sleeping in the car, listening to praise music in my iPod. And in one of my dreams, I recognized a particular song by Third Day’s “Offerings” CD. The piggy-back songs were “Agnes Dei” and “Holy”. Well, I dreamed that it was playing in the car’s CD player, and for some reason, I was trying to turn it off; much like when you don’t want to hear something, and you try to shut it off. But no matter what I did, it continued to play. I ejected the CD, then suddenly the next verse came on. I tried turning down the volume, but no change. I pushed every button on the stereo, but it continued to play. By this time, “Holy” was playing. If you don’t know the song, there are many pauses throughout it that acted as teases in this situation, for after pressing a button, I’d hear a pause, thinking I’d succeeded in turning it off, only to shortly hear the next verse. I finally turned the car off…but the song continued to play. Even after pulling the key out of the ignition, and thinking I’d finally reached my goal, I soon heard the final verse, “King of Kings, Lord of Lords, I worship you.” And just as I was in complete confusion, that final verse continued to repeat, “King of Kings, Lord of Lords, I worship you.” Then I woke up.

Triumphal Entry

In Luke 19, during Jesus’ “Triumphal Entry” into Jerusalem, the whole crowd began joyfully praising God loudly, saying: “Blessed is the King who comes in the name of the Lord!” and “Peace in Heaven and glory in the highest!” Then, when some of the Pharisees in the crowd commanded Jesus to scold His disciples for saying these things, Jesus replied, “I tell you, if they kept quiet, the rocks would cry out!”

In my dream, no matter what I did, even to the point of turning off the power from the battery to the stereo, there was nothing I could do to turn off the music that gave praises to God. In Luke, Jesus said that even if He was to shut up the people, the rocks would still cry out His name in praises.
