I once had a conversation with a friend, who was a Sunni Muslim, about his beliefs. He said that they believed they (Muslims) replaced the Jews as God’s chosen people, because of all the times when Israel had continued to deny Him. They believe that God had finally said, (paraphrased in my friend’s words) ‘The heck with you rebellious and disobedient people…I’m going to a new people who will listen to Me and obey Me!’
According to Theology, Scripture, Just By Knowing God’s Character
At the time, I didn’t know how to fully respond to that. But since then, I have learned several ways, according to theology, scripture, and just by knowing God’s character, to counter that claim. And while reading through Jeremiah, I came across some scripture that would also fit this argument:
- Jeremiah 31:36-37 : “…Only if these decrees (mentioned in v.35) vanish from My sight,” declares the Lord, “will the descendants of Israel ever cease to be a nation before me.” (Or in another translation): “This is what the Lord says: ‘Only if the heavens above can be measured and the foundations of the earth below be searched out, will I reject all the descendants of Israel because of all they have done,’ declares the Lord.”
I Believe This Also Reinforces Paul’s Claim
I believe this also reinforces Paul’s claim in Romans 8:38, where he said, “And I am convinced that nothing can ever separate us from God’s love. Neither death nor life, neither angels nor rulers, neither fears for today nor our worries about tomorrow – not even the powers of hell can separate us from God’s love.”
God is Neither Human
Humanly-speaking, what my Muslim-friend believed would make sense, for who would put up with such disobedience and rebellion for so long? Thankfully, God is neither human, nor behaves like one, He keeps His promises, and holds true to His words.
