I was just thinking about a common conversation I once had with somebody about missions and evangelism. Now, I haven’t had a conversation about this in a while, so it’s not in reference to anybody in particular, just something that came to mind in reflection to the message one evening.
What About People Who’ve Never Heard?
When telling people (even “Christians”) that Jesus is the only way to be saved, they will often say, “Well, what about those people in remote parts of the world who’ve never heard about Jesus. Will they all go to hell then?”
The obvious and unfortunate answer is, “well, yeah,” whereas the person will often respond about how unfair God is for condemning somebody who has never heard the Gospel. But now notice, the people who complain about such are also most often people who don’t share the gospel with anybody anyway?
Why Didn’t They Hear?
So why didn’t they hear the gospel before they died? Because nobody traveled there to share it with them. Are they condemned then to hell? Well, the question goes then to you: if you hadn’t ever heard the gospel and never repented, where would YOU be going? Is that fair? If not, then why did you accept Jesus?
Think of it this way, if you hand a starving child a sandwich, won’t he gladly receive it from you in order that he may survive? In 2011 (according to Worldvision), 19,000 children under the age of 5 die each DAY from hunger or malnutrition. Now what would be better in their eyes, for you to complain about how unfair it was that their friends and relatives died because they didn’t have a sandwich, or for you to personally bring sandwiches to them in order to save those who are still living?
My point is, instead of complaining about how unfair God is for not allowing somebody into heaven because they didn’t hear the gospel, let that motivate you to travel there and tell them yourself. Because if you’re really so worried about what happens to those who haven’t heard the gospel, then why aren’t you sharing it with anybody yourself?
