Hey Andy, if Jesus tells us to love our enemies, then why are so many Christians online so hateful? I’m a Christian and cannot even fathom saying some of the things I see other Christians saying online.
I’m A Christian
Hey man, I totally hear you. No really, I do. I’m a Christian, and if I comment on an online forum or Facebook post in one of the Christian groups I’m in, I’ll get an eye-full of insults, criticism…just mean comments, and often times, they don’t even fully understand what I meant, or what was behind why I said it. And the next thing I know, others are ganging up on me, too.
Non-Christian Friend’s Post
But now, the other day, I commented something on a non-Christian friend’s post. I received a notification that somebody else commented to my response, and at first, I was cautious about reading it because of the experience I mentioned above. But when I did, though the (non-Christian) guy disagreed with me, he was very kind and respectful.
God’s Big Enough To Defend Himself
So why are people who are commanded to love one another as Christ loves us and to love others as ourselves often so mean instead? If you figure that out, blog about it and send me the link, seriously. All I can figure is that they believe so strongly about their views of God that if anybody says something otherwise, they get offended, like when you criticize their children or something. But God’s big enough to defend Himself – we don’t need to get upset when somebody doesn’t believe the same as us (I have no doubt such offenses and behaviors against such are reasons for church splits, too!).
Good question. Thanks for asking!
