How Do You Know When There Are Too Many Churches?

too many churches

Hey Andy, how do you know when there are far too many churches?

Hi, I really wish you’d gone into more with your question, because one could wonder if there’s such a thing as “too many” churches. Are you asking about too many churches in a single town, or too many in general?

In general, I have to wonder if there aren’t enough churches, or at least, not enough churches that preach the Truth of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. For there are many churches that don’t, but the fact that the world, even to this day, doesn’t fully know what the Bible says, means, stands for, stands against, etc. may show that either we as Christians haven’t been doing a good enough job of carrying out the Great Commission, or that there aren’t enough churches in the area to compensate for all the people who don’t yet know Jesus Christ.

However, I believe is possible to have too many churches in a single town. For instance, after seminary, I was called to serve a church in a small, college town of Kentucky, where though the population actually doubled during the school year, there were close to 70 churches in that county alone. If you were to do the math, that meant that each could house about 250 people equally (assuming everybody were to attend a church). The problem, though, was that most of the churches there were competing with one another, and many were formed from splits (conflict).

So how do you know when there are too many churches? I’d say when they begin to compete against one another.
