How Do I Learn to Pray?

Hey Andy, what are the best Christian prayer websites for beginners?

This one 🙂
Hi. Well, I’m not too sure about websites for prayer, but I can help you in learning to pray.

Pray the Psalms

First, if you’re looking for a way to start off with what to say to God, read through the book of Psalms (or read one out loud to get a head start).

Pray the Lord’s Prayer

Or, if you’d like more of a template, or steps to pray from the Bible, then I invite you to check out my post on how to pray the Lord’s Prayer.

Don’t Babble

In Matthew 6, Jesus said that when you pray, neither to babble nor be like those who do so in public for all to see. But instead to go into your room, close the door, and pray to God in secret.

A Conversational Tone

Another way I once heard about was, when you’re in a good spot where you don’t have any distractions around you and you can take time out to pray, imagine Jesus asking, “How are you doing?” And then once you’ve finished telling Him everything, imagine Jesus saying, “No, really. How are you doing?” The reason for the double question is because when asked the first one, we often give a surface answer – ‘oh, I’m fine, nice day, everything’s good, etc….’ But when He asks again, you’ve already gotten all the B.S. out, allowing Him to get to the source of what’s going on, and by this time, you’re ready to be fully transparent with Him.
And you may feel like you’re talking to a wall at first. That’s OK though, because God’s presence is not based on your feelings. He’s there, He’s listening, and He’s with you when you pray to Him.

Prayer as a 2-Way Conversation

Remember, prayer is conversation with God – you talk and He listens; He talks and you listen – you have to remember that second part in there, and be willing to obey whatever He tells you to do. Some things to pray for:
  • Ask Him to reveal Himself to you (then keep watch for His answer)
  • Vent out to Him (seriously, there’s no words He hasn’t heard before, and no situation you could possibly be in that somebody hasn’t been in and vented out to Him about before).
  • Ask Him questions about Him – why do you allow this? why did you do this? etc.
  • Ask for clarification about something you read in the Bible.
  • Lift up friends and family who don’t know Him and for ways to share about Him with them.

If you want a good website (or video) on how to pray, I’d like to suggest this sermon from Francis Chan:

Like I said, there are no right or wrong words to say when praying – it’s communication with God, and if you have that close relationship with Him (which will grow as you pray more often and read His Word), then anything going on in your life is fair game to bring up. But if anything, in terms of what needs to be right, it’s your heart.
