Hey Andy, how do I talk to God about the problems in my life? I have obstacles in my life that seem almost impossible to overcome at the moment. I pray, but I don’t know if God hears me and I don’t know how to hear him.
Hi, you know, one of the things that the Lord seems to love doing is taking something that we think is impossible, and showing us how possible anything and everything is when He’s involved.
God Comforts Elijah
Remember in 1 Kings 19, when Elijah was depressed and didn’t think he would survive? Then the Lord took him to the top of a mountain so He could show Himself to Elijah. The Bible says that a powerful wind stormed by, rocking the stones and splitting the mountain, but the Lord wasn’t in the wind. Then there was a huge earthquake, but the Lord wasn’t in the earthquake, either. Then there was a fire, but again, the Lord wasn’t in the fire. Then there was a gentle whisper. The Lord was in the gentle whisper. When trying to listen for the Lord, we often expect something huge, or would like it so we wouldn’t miss it, and sometimes He will speak with a boom. But I think that a lot of times, He speaks in a gentle whisper, and we need to push away everything else that’s making all the noise – impossible-looking stuff, for instance – in order to hear Him.
How to Talk to God About Your Problems
I once heard somebody suggest that if you’re having trouble trying to talk to God, try imagining Him asking, “How are you doing? What’s going on?” Then after you’ve told Him everything, imagine Him saying, “No, really. How are you doing? What’s going on?” This gives you a chance to get out all the short talk and dig down deep into what’s really eating up your heart.
Talk to God regularly. Even when it doesn’t feel like God’s listening, He is. Just keep praying to Him, talking with Him, venting to Him, trusting Him to take care of all the noisy (impossible) things, and listening for Him.
Also, tune in next Monday when I help somebody know when God is talking with him.
