Hey Andy, should Christians celebrate Valentine’s Day?
Hi, wow, way to open a can of worms there buddy. 😛 Actually, when I was in seminary, a friend of mine shared with me a conversation he and his girlfriend had about this:
He said his girlfriend told him that she didn’t want to celebrate Valentine’s Day because it’s not a Christian holiday — if anything, it’s more pagan.
Saint Valentine’s Day
Now, I know, I know…it’s called, “Saint Valentine’s Day”. But then she pointed out the way it’s promoted: they buy something for each other (candy, jewelry, take out to dinner), she’ll love the guy so much if he got her something shiny and expensive that they’ll have sex as a way of saying “thank you” or “I love you”, etc….
Now, first of all, that’s an interesting way for a GIRL to think about Valentine’s Day. But when you think of it, she’s not wrong. I mean, Hallmark has totally capitalized on this holiday, as well as jewelry stores and restaurants, to the point where we guys can get into real trouble if we don’t have at least a card for them on this day, right?
Love Each Other, Shouldn’t You Tell Each Other All the Time
But Ladies: isn’t it more romantic when your guy sends you flowers “just because he loves you” on a day that you least expect it than on a day that you do? I would think it would take away the point of sending them if he did it on a day that he was expected to. And if you love each other, shouldn’t you tell each other all the time? Why just on one day (sort of sounds like men in the past didn’t show much affection, so women called for a holiday in order to receive some sort of affection once in a while…which really is not a sign of a healthy relationship).
Secular Holiday Like Valentine’s Day
My friend and his girlfriend were an affectionate couple, so maybe they didn’t need a “secular” holiday like Valentine’s Day to spark things up, let alone spend more money for. But maybe you and your significant other do.
