Hey Andy, why wouldn’t God forgive someone if they person blasphemes against the Holy Spirit? That makes it unfair. For instance, lets say you offended God with this because you were angry at a moment in your life, I mean really angry. Then, when you calmed down and realized that what you did was stupid of you to say or think it etc., you pray and ask God to forgive you for doing that, you fell in your heart to regret it. Now wouldn’t this supreme being who has infinite wisdom and the Bible states he is more love, mercy, slow to anger, compassion, hope, come to me let us reason, for no matter how dark your sin is, ill make it white as snow, etc.? Now after these quotes from God in the Bible, you tell me God wouldn’t forgive this sin because he knows you offended him because you acted on impulse? Oh, isn’t the Holy Spirit God himself too?
Hi. Blaspheming against the Holy Spirit isn’t so much something you do as it is something you don’t do. Let me explain: As Christians, we know that the only way to Heaven is through Jesus Christ (John 14:6 – “I am the Way, and the Truth, and the Life. Nobody comes/goes to the Father but through Me.”) So if you accept Christ, then you’ll go to Heaven, right?
Well, as Christians, we also know that the only way to not go to Heaven is to not accept Christ. And you’re right, the Holy Spirit is also God, and so is the Son. So if you reject the Son, you also reject the Father, and you also reject the Holy Spirit. This is what it means to blaspheme the Holy Spirit – to reject Christ and the free gift of salvation that God offers through Christ.
Now, I see you asking, ‘what if you get really angry at God and begin throwing cusses up at Him or something’. I believe it’s OK to get angry with God, even throwing your fist up at Him sometimes (He’s God. He can take it). Psalm 88 is a great example of this. I’ve gotten angry at God many times, and every time, He works with me, helps me understand. And sometimes, anger at Him is a means of communication with Him – it’s a time when we truly open up our emotions with Him (anger is sometimes the deepest form of prayer).
See, Jesus will forgive any sin – it doesn’t matter how bad you or others may believe it is. If you genuinely repent (turn from your sin) and ask for forgiveness, with the attitude in your heart to never do it again, basically, then Jesus will forgive you. It’s when you never approach Him and completely reject Him up until your death that it becomes too late to be forgiven.
