Hey Andy, would you ever take part in an interdenominational event? Like a discussion or social event? Or would you only do so with members of your own branch of faith?
Heck yeah, I would TOTALLY take part in in an interdenominational event. Denominations are just expressions of differences…they’re not meant to separate the Body of Christ.
ACTIVATE Event
In fact, from 2006-2007, while serving a church in a small town of Kentucky, I’d befriended some church leaders from other denominations in the area, and was able to lead the founding of an interdenominational committee, which quickly grew into a non-profit organization. We called it “A.C.T.I.V.A.T.E.”, which stood for “Adolescent Christians Together In Victory Against The Enemy”, and would hold youth rallies every month. And to be sure none of us adults could mess it up with our pre-determined theological prejudices or whatever, we designed ACTIVATE to be run by Sr. High youth delegates from several local churches (all different denominations), while we adults only served as advisers and helpers. We had a mission statement and a logo (picture above) which symbolizes breaking down denominational walls that separate us as members of the Body of Christ. And at every rally, we included free giveaways, free food, a worship band, games, and a speaker, who would end with an altar call. It was really awesome, and it made a huge impact among the churches, throughout the counties, and surrounding neighborhoods!
Believe it or not, my original plan for ACTIVATE was formed when I tried to start up something among the local churches in Chicago throughout my denomination (Evangelical Covenant at the time), but none of them were interested. Either they couldn’t grasp the point, or they just didn’t want to (ego, size of groups, control, etc.). I hear they’ve finally put it together (10 years later), but it’s only throughout the denomination, not interdenominational.
A wise seminary professor of mine once told me that “Denominations aren’t sinful…it’s only when they separate us that they become sin.” So have fun praising God together with your interdenominational friends!
